Recently, when the Hornets’ late-season surge continued with a 114-103 win over the Knicks, a bizarre courtside moment ended up stealing the spotlight from the game itself.
As the Eastern Conference playoff race tightens, with just a two-game gap separating the fifth and tenth seeds, every result carries weight.

A fan seated courtside grabbed a loose ball and attempted a shot toward the basket. Instead, the ball struck Kon Knueppel in the back of the head while the rookie was facing the other direction.

Rapper DaBaby, seated nearby, reacted immediately. In a fan-captured video that quickly circulated online, the Charlotte native was calling out the incident in defense of the fan favorite rookie.

“Let’s get this man outta here… he done hit the Rookie of the Year with the ball,” he said, turning toward security as the crowd reacted.

Despite the interruption, Charlotte maintained control throughout the night. The home side built an early lead and never allowed New York, which entered on a seven-game winning streak, to fully recover.

The Rookie of the Year race has tightened, but Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd believes the debate shouldn’t be close despite Kon Knueppel’s growing momentum.

Statistically, the Dallas rookie has been dominant, leading all first-year players with 20.4 points per game while adding 6.6 rebounds and 4.7 assists.

A fan tried to shoot a ball. He hit Kon Knueppel in the head instead. DaBaby called for his ejection. The Hornets won. And the Rookie of the Year race got even more interesting.
