UFC fans witnessed one of the most frightening moments in recent MMA history when Maycee Barber was brutally knocked out and then choked unconscious by Alexa Grasso during their fight at UFC Fight Night 271 in Seattle.
Barber, 27, entered the bout as one of the UFC’s rising female stars. But halfway through the first round, she was caught by a clean punch that appeared to knock her out before she even hit the ground. As Barber collapsed, Grasso followed her to the mat and wrapped her arm around Barber’s neck, tightening a choke on a fighter who was already unconscious.

The referee quickly stepped in to stop the fight, but the disturbing scene didn’t end there. A dazed Barber instinctively grabbed the referee’s leg for help before collapsing flat on her back with her arms spread and eyes open. She appeared completely unresponsive as medics rushed into the cage.

For several tense moments, Barber lay motionless while Grasso’s celebration came to a halt. The Mexican fighter watched with concern as doctors worked to revive her opponent. Thankfully, Barber eventually regained enough awareness to stand and leave the cage on her own.

Still, the incident shocked viewers across social media.
Many fans called it “one of the most violent finishes in UFC history,” while others questioned why the choke was allowed once Barber was clearly out.

“This could have ended her life,” one fan wrote.
Saturday’s loss was Barber’s first defeat since 2021 also to Grasso breaking her seven-fight win streak. Despite the terrifying scene, Barber has since told reporters she intends to fight again.

For now, the MMA world is simply relieved she walked out of the cage alive
