Just as fans were pouring into Augusta for one of golf’s most celebrated weeks, an unexpected off-course incident briefly stole the spotlight. Police confirmed that a South Carolina man was arrested near Augusta.
Authorities identified the suspect as 36-year-old Matthew Stroud, who reportedly ignored several warnings to leave the area. Fans were already making their way in for early-week activities.

According to officials, police first instructed Stroud to leave, and he complied temporarily. But not long after, he returned and continued the same behavior, forcing authorities to intervene.

A citation obtained by WJBF that Stroud “refused to leave Masters property even after being told multiple times by GBI Agents.” Officers arrested him near Magnolia Lane, one of Augusta National’s most iconic entrances.

Stroud was later booked at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center, where The Augusta Press reported he appeared intoxicated. Richmond County Sheriff’s Capt. Scott Gay confirmed that officers gave Stroud.

“Stroud initially left when instructed, but later returned and continued the behavior,” Gay said. “When he refused to leave a second time, deputies arrested him for criminal trespassing.”

Stroud was released shortly afterward on a $285 bond. Fortunately for tournament organizers, the brief disturbance did not disrupt any preparations at Augusta National, and operations continued as planned.

Some legends won’t be teeing it up this year including Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson but the tournament is still expected to deliver plenty of drama.

For now, the arrest remains nothing more than a small bump in an otherwise electric Masters week. Fans are ready, the field is set, and Augusta National is officially buzzing.
