The college basketball community is reeling after news that former UNLV standout and NBA veteran Gerald Paddio has tragically died in a car accident in Louisiana. He was 60 years old.

According to early reports from Newsweek and local authorities, the fatal crash happened in Rayne, Louisiana. Deputies responded to a single-car accident where one man was discovered deceased at the scene.

Local station KLFY News 10 reported that Paddio’s vehicle veered off the roadway for reasons that remain unclear. The car then struck a culvert, and the impact ejected Paddio from the vehicle.

Paddio leaves behind a legacy etched into NCAA Tournament history. Standing at 6-foot-7, he became a key figure for the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels during their iconic 1986–87 season.

His clutch shooting helped define UNLV’s postseason run. In the Elite Eight victory over Iowa, Paddio delivered one of the most memorable performances of his college career by securing the Rebels’ spot in the Final Four.

After college, Paddio entered the 1988 NBA Draft, where the Boston Celtics selected him 74th overall. Though he never suited up for the Celtics, he eventually broke into the league during the 1990–91 season.

His passing has devastated fans, former teammates, and members of the wider basketball community who remember him not just for his talent, but for his quiet perseverance and impact on every team he represented.

As investigations continue into the cause of the accident, tributes from across the sports world are pouring in honoring a player whose contributions on and off the court left an unforgettable mark.
