Ugly Scene Unfolds as High School Basketball Player Attacks Referee at End of Game

February 21, 2026

The Incident

Video footage shows the Dorsey player a senior whose high school career ended with the loss walking across the court toward an official after the game.

The official briefly fell to the ground, mimicking a tactic seen in other recent referee incidents. Several adults and teammates rushed in to restrain the angry player, but he broke free and began throwing punches at the official.

The referee managed to evade the first two swings and appeared to throw one punch in self-defense before others regained control of the situation and de-escalated the chaos.

The Aftermath

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) quickly launched an investigation into the incident, releasing a statement:

“The Los Angeles Unified School District expects its student-athletes to meet high standards of conduct and sportsmanship. We have been aware of an alleged incident after last night’s game at Dorsey High School.”

The Game Itself

The altercation overshadowed what was otherwise a standout performance by Downtown Magnets’ Patrick Lei, who led the No. 12 seed Suns to victory with 30 points and 10 rebounds.

For Dorsey, the loss ends their playoff run and for one player, the后果 may extend far beyond the basketball court.

The Bigger Picture

The incident adds to a troubling pattern of referee assaults in youth and high school sports. Officials across the country have reported increasing incidents of verbal and physical abuse, leading many to quit the profession. Games have been forfeited, seasons canceled, and in some cases, criminal charges filed.

The Dorsey player’s actions, captured on video and shared widely online, will likely result in disciplinary action from both the school district and the CIF. Whether criminal charges follow remains to be seen.

For now, a high school basketball game meant to showcase young athletes’ skills has instead become a cautionary tale about what happens when competition crosses into violence.
