WNBA Finds No Evidence of Racist Fan Behavior Toward Angel Reese After Heated Game vs. Fever
The WNBA has completed its investigation into claims that Angel Reese was subjected to racist comments from fans during the May 17 game between the Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever. The game, which featured two of the league’s most talked-about rookies—Reese and Caitlin Clark—drew major attention both for its competitive play and for a moment in which Clark committed a flagrant foul on Reese. Following the game, social media posts claimed that Reese had also been targeted with racist heckling from the crowd.
In response, the WNBA launched a full investigation. League officials reviewed video and audio from the game, interviewed fans, and spoke with team and arena staff. After completing the review, the WNBA said there was no evidence to confirm the allegations. A league statement noted that it was “unable to substantiate” the claims of racist behavior.

The situation sparked major discussion online and in sports media. ESPN analyst Chiney Ogwumike, who initially amplified the claims during a broadcast, later issued a public apology. She said her comments were made in the heat of the moment and may have caused confusion. Ogwumike emphasized her ongoing support for WNBA players and the community.

Both the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever issued statements supporting the WNBA’s handling of the situation. Officials from Gainbridge Fieldhouse, where the game was played, reaffirmed their stance against hate speech and said they are committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all players and fans.
Although the investigation didn’t find proof of racist behavior, the situation highlighted growing concerns about how players—particularly Black women—are treated by fans and how fast unverified claims can spread online. The WNBA stated it remains focused on ensuring a safe and inclusive atmosphere at all games going forward.
